Suresh Raina, a former Indian cricket star, has called for Virat Kohli to receive the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award. Raina believes Kohli's significant contributions to Indian cricket warrant such recognition. Kohli's unexpected retirement from Test cricket on May 12 took many by surprise, especially as it came just before a crucial series against England.
Kohli and Sharma's Test Farewell
Rohit Sharma was the first to announce his retirement from Test cricket, followed by Kohli just five days later. Kohli ranks as India's fourth-highest run-scorer in Tests, amassing 9,230 runs across 123 matches, including 30 centuries.
Raina's Plea for Kohli's Recognition
During a rain-interrupted match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders, Raina expressed his views on Star Sports, stating that Kohli is an ideal candidate for the Bharat Ratna. He emphasized that this honor would be a fitting tribute to a player who elevated Indian cricket to new heights. Under Kohli's leadership, India held the number one Test ranking for 42 months. To date, Sachin Tendulkar remains the only cricketer to have received the Bharat Ratna, awarded in 2014 at the age of 40. Raina also suggested that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) should organize a farewell match for Kohli at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Raina Advocates for a Retirement Match
Raina stated, 'I believe the Indian government should honor him with the Bharat Ratna due to his numerous achievements for the country.' He further added, 'He deserves a retirement match in Delhi, where his family and coach could be present to support him. After all he has done for India, it is only fitting that he is honored with such a match.'
